Kava, a tropical plant belonging to the pepper family, has a rich history of use in the South Pacific. Traditionally, the raw root is chewed, allowing alkaline salivary enzymes to extract the plant's active constituents. These are then spat into a bowl and mixed with water to create the ceremonial beverage known as milolua.

The active compounds in kava, collectively known as kavalactones, have an impact on the central nervous system. This has earned the herb the nickname "peace plant," and it is often savored by Pacific Islanders at the day's end. The botanical name, given by the botanist on Captain James Cook's inaugural voyage to the region, translates to "intoxicating pepper."
